The WBC are hyper Calvinists. I have noticed that a lot of the more extreme Christian fundamentalist are all Calvinists. Of course, not all Calvinists are crazy extremists.
A few years back, I watched a British documentary on WBC and one of Phelp's granddaughters said that her family would not be upset if she got hit by a car because it would mean that she wasn't one of the elect. That is a very sad way to be brought up.
They send their children to public school which surprises me but I think that the experience must make the children feel even more isolated and hated. If I remember correctly the group interpreted being hated to mean that they are doing the right thing. The bible does provide a cover for being hated.
If I understand their thinking, as Calvinists, they don't really believe that they have any influence on whether someone is saved. The rest of the world is doomed anyway and most of humanity will be tortured for an eternity. However, they were commanded to preach to the world so none of us could say that we weren't warned. On line, I have met some Calvinists with similar thinking, they just don't bring attention to their more obnoxious beliefs but if you push them, they still express similar thoughts.

Quote:John 1518"If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19"If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. 20"Remember the word that I said to you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also
