Yeah the Catholic church has a habit of just poofing infallible eternal theological concepts in and out of existence.
And I really don't like it when atheists of all people say the Bible isn't supposed to be taken literally. It may be idiocy to take it literally, but I wouldn't claim to know the minds of the people that put it together, and there's nowhere in the documents themselves that claims 'you shouldn't take this literally by the way'. It's not my or any atheist's job to qualify the religion, you just respond to the religious claims that the theists make.
