I'll tell you what my manager told me when I started my current job a few years back; it's never a detriment to understand how the money works. SMEs need accountants and bookkeepers because the vast majority don't know anything about double entry, impress, vat returns etc. It's a good market to tap into, but like with any business you need to create a name for yourself.
I'd recommend practicing with company accounts before diving in head first. If theres one piece of advice I could impart myself it's that the theory is obviously very idealized, whereas the reality can be a lot different. So get lots of practice. I'd definitely reocommened applying for a job as a bookkeeper first to get some experience though obviously that's easier said than done.
