It depends. If it is reported it would create a panic. Even if it was not reported, it would still be visually noticeable that at some point someone with a backyard telescope would figure it out. We will panic and still get wiped out.
Our biggest threat right now is ourselves with CO2 pollution, pollution in general, and divisive wars. Our planet has had 5 mass extinctions, and we know one of them was caused by a meteor. The planet will get struck again by either a comet or meteor again at some point, it is not a matter of if, but when.. All one has to do to know that is to look at the pock marked moon.
