The Old Testament stories are primarily essays about each of the Ten Commandments as set forth in Exodus 34:12-28. The stories show the application of the Ten Commandments in practice. Once you fully understand the real Ten Commandments you can easily associate the stories to one of them.
The whole purpose of the OT was to show the need for a redeemer, because no one was keeping the 10 Commandments, and to show who the redeemer was.
