I am in the Buckle of the Bible Belt here in Middle TN, and I feel your pain. People just automatically assume that everyone thinks the same way you do. They don't really know what an atheist is, most really just know what they know from the dolt on the dais on Sunday.
For what it's worth, I do think everyone should be exposed to religion, from a neutral standpoint.
