And that's the beauty of it. Generations of clergymen made a fortune out of that concept. It gives them power over people like Drich, who sees himself (and anybody else for that matter) enslaved to sin. So these people are easily manipulated to do someone else's bidding if that someone offers them a way to salvation.
Sin isn't a christian invention by the way. Lots of older religions knew that concept too. Among them the old Egyptians, who had quite similar thougts on the afterlife and the final judgment. And boy did the priesthood thrive by selling the book of the dead, which was more or less a GPS system for the perils that await the freshly deceased.
