Racism is assigning traits to an outside group, this group being defined by skin color.
We are evolved to think in generalizations and grouping. Racism is our natural state of "my tribe vs their tribe" based on closeness of skin color. Racism is a subset of Xenophobia.
We have to teach ourselves not to be racist. Have you ever noticed that it is almost exclusively the most unlearned that are the most racist?

From my experience, less smart people justify racism for no reason, and smart people justify it because the statistics say one race is worse (i.e. Asians have more IQ, blacks have less, etc.)
