Apparently there is an ancient belief that the objects touched by a spiritual person may absorb some of that person's spiritual energy. So we get holy water, chrism, saintly relics, icons, etc. Maybe this even explains part of the thinking behind the Eucharist? It seems that some Christians think of the Eucharist almost like Popeye thinks about his can of spinach.
