There's also the simple fact that the more outspoken dissent there is, the less fear there is of being known as a dissenter. It's hard when you're the only one calling out the bullshit. It's a lot easier when you've got a group around you.

I can see mainstream christianity becoming in the near future (50-100 years) much like the Amish and Quaker beliefs today. Quaint religions practiced by a segment of population so small that inbreeding is a real concern.
