The association between music and Islam is strange to me, on the one hand people blatantly sing quran verses, on the other hand extreme groups tend to ban music.  My friend is a strict Muslim to a ridiculous degree and even he doesn't seem sure if Music is really haram or not, he still had drums at his wedding.

This sort of thing is not unique to Islam.  There are Christians sects that have banned dancing, and I recall a Christian telling me (circa 1980) that listening to the Beatles was sinful.

There are all kinds of things that some Christian sects have banned.  At least one banned all sexual intercourse (including among those who were married):  The Shakers:

All kinds of things have been banned by different sects.  The same sort of thing happens with Islam as in Christianity, where one group prohibits things that other groups are fine with.

So, the lesson one should take away is this:  One ought not judge all of Islam by the pronouncements of one particular sect, just as one ought not judge all of Christianity by the pronouncements of one particular sect.  It is the same sort of mistake in both cases.
