When I was a boy living in Iran, Ramadan was a fairly bloody affair, with the faithful flogging themselves with chains and other implements until their backs bled.
I don't really know how to respond. It's scary that a human being can be driven to do something like that to themselves.
A lot of the self-mutilation, if I understand correctly, is done to repent for sins somehow. Now that's very deep self-loathing that leads to self-harm. That kind of behavior is typical for a range of mental disorders, yet, as evidenced here, common among religious. It's a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg -- were these individuals prone to self-harm outside of their beliefs, or did their beliefs drive them to having such desires? Either way, it's extremely disturbing,
