Since atheism does not have dogma or doctrine, there is nothing that can connect it to mass murder. You can't get from, "I disbelieve in gods, so I'll murder millions in my country".
Where as, all of the Abrahamic religions do have dogma and doctrine that, depending on interpretation, can lead to the murder of millions. A quarter of a million Muslims were killed in the Crusades based on doctrine. Can you imagine if the Christians had modern weapons?
The Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao regimes were not atheist regimes, they were totalitarian Communist regimes. That was their motivation for mass murder. They replaced an infallible god with an infallible 'State'.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
