Rupert Murdoch, his vile influence on US media and the Republican dismantling of the fairness doctrine has done more damage to to the US (and ultimately the world).
I remember a time when Glenn Beck and all these irrational idiots were unheard of-- except on AM radio at 2 in the morning. Now they are everywhere on US airwaves, and not just on FOX. By the mid 90s this started to change. Now they are doing their damndest to shove the overton window even further to the right, making even Nixon and Reagan look like liberals today.
It's interesting that most of us would abhor the banning of The Sun or The Times, because we believe in freedom of the press, and we would fight a government edict that a new tax be introduced to publish a government-regulated newspaper. But when it comes to broadcast news, we're more than happy to ban any provider we don't like and impose State rules right across news reporting, and pay through the nose for a lumbering State-controlled information provider. It's what we're used to, I suppose, a bit like the Soviet masses were for 60 years.
