And yet there are species of skinks and birds that have been breeding within our lifetimes that no longer can. Do a search for "ring species" and see for yourself, it's actually pretty interesting; Population A gives birth to Population B, which in turn gives rise to Population C, and so on. Population, let's call it G, is a product of the direct lineage of Population A, and yet if a member of Population G is encouraged to breed with a member of Population A, no interbreeding will be possible due to the intervening genetic drift.
