I think a very important point which needs to be emphasised is that taste in music is intrinsically a subjective matter; there is no right and wrong as there is with science, but only opinions. Yes, some bands happen to have a positive effect on a large number of people, which in turn leads to quantifiable success, but using this quantifiability to question the validity of someone's opinion does not make sense. The impact that music has on someone is not something which is measurable; it is wholly unique to them and different for every individual. Of course, people's musical preferences can be questioned but it's just a rather irrational thing to do seeing as no facts can be derived from subjective arguments.
I think ABBA are freakin' awesome personally I wouldn't find their songs particularly lyrically deep in comparison to other artists I like, but few bands have written melodies that I find as infectiously catchy and mood-turning (in my opinion)
