You should get out more. It is really, really easy to believe. I have met all kinds of people, who believe all sorts of batshit crazy things.
I've been on this forum for a little while and interacted with plenty of religious people personally. I'm well aware of the absurdity of the beliefs they can hold. That's not why I'm skeptical of this story.
Quote:What often happens is, people compartmentalize their knowledge and beliefs, such that they pretend that one area of knowledge (one subject, if you will), has no significance for any other area of knowledge. So they end up with all sorts of contradictory beliefs, without realizing it.
There is a fashion these days to pretend that religion and science are about different things, and can coexist without contradiction. Of course, that is absurd, but it is something that many people believe. You can read about it at:

Of course, some people advocate such an approach for pragmatic reasons, without actually believing the nonsense themselves. But, of course, they must pretend and say they believe it, otherwise others will not take it seriously.
I am well aware of NOMA and cognitive dissonance, and again that's got nothing to do with what I mean.
