In book one I hate her, by book 5 I understand her better and feel sorry for her. She hates being seen as a week female, wishes she'd been born a man. She feels always passed over just for being a woman, hates that all woman are bought and sold and traded like cattle, married off with no say so in their own lives. The prophecy she received as a young woman would screw with anyone's head. She's walking around knowing someday she'll lose everything, so her actions are those of a woman desperate not to lose her remaining children.
She's still not a likable character or anything, but more understandable, I think.
I completely agree. Cersei is actually my favorite character
She is determined to rule Westeros, she feels like that is her destiny (of course, that prophecy could only strengthen her certainty, her pride, and her paranoia)
Nevertheless, she is a bold, strong, and determined. She is also prideful, arrogant, and foolish at times. In the end she wants to protect her and to rule Westeros, and she is never apologetic for it. Ever.
