I think this final scene was, sadly, just a woman in the fridge kind of trope.I dunno. She was given the chance to back out of the marriage but exercised her agency and chose to enter the Bolton's den in order to attain a position for revenge. What did she think was going to happen on the wedding night?
She could consent to marrying Ramsay and still totally dread the wedding night. She, after all, wouldn't have known for sure that Ramsay was going to rape her; she might have been expecting something different. Not necessarily a romantic interlude, I think she understood what a psycho Ramsay was to know that she wasn't going to be getting a lovey-dovey wedding night (knowing what Ramsay has done to Theon, and hearing what he's done to women in the past), but expecting her to be able to play it cool when she realizes that she's about to be raped and that Theon was going to be watching the whole time is too much to ask, I think.
I've only ever seen/heard/read of one character who believably played it cool while being raped.
Quote:That being said I do wish the writers had given her less of a victim-y role in that scene. She had just smacked down Myranda in the bath scene and had been utterly in control and collected throughout her time in Winterfell so far.
Again, I'm not sure she expected to be raped on her wedding night, or at least not in that manner. I thought it was completely believable that she would show the kind of personal strength she showed with Myranda in the bath scene and then not be able to muster the kind of strength she would need to not appear as a victim while she's being fucking raped. She is, after all, a victim of marital rape at that point.
I know I wouldn't be able to stand up to that kind of treatment no matter how much time and effort I spent putting on a strong facade and not letting people intimidate me or make me scared of them. Rape is fucking scary and it's not something most women can't just put a brave face and grit their teeth through. I thought it was incredibly brave of Sansa to not completely fall apart and start crying the instant she realized that she was (1) going to be raped, and (2) that Theon was going to be there watching the whole time.
I don't know, maybe this is a male versus female perspective thing.
Quote:I would've preferred her surprising Ramsay by initating the scene or something...
I think that would have been an interesting take on the scene, especially given Baelish's advice to her to make Ramsay hers, to woo him. But even that's asking a hell of a lot for a, what? 15-16 year old girl? How old is Sansa supposed to be on the show? She's still incredibly young and naive, even with all that she's been through.
Quote:or shit, even just showing her face as completely calm and unreactive while Ramsay was trying to intimidate her would've been better.
I felt like she was doing exactly that until she realized that Theon was being made to watch. She seemed to be trying to put on the brave face and get on with her wifely duties, even if she was nervous or dreading what was to come. Had Ramsay not made Theon stay I thought Sansa would have been able to handle that night better, but Ramsay proved himself to be a sick fuck and totally threw her off her guard - what guard she managed to have.
