The world in which we would then live would be artificial, but that reality being contingent on manipulation of sensory input to the brain makes the ruse possible. We already have a monism-- the monism of subjective experience. All the other stuff about world and atoms 'n' sich is derived ideas-- which may or may not represent something which is real outside the context of experience.
The question is whether there is anything you can experience that will tell you for sure what underlies that experiential monism. And the Matrix example serves to show that what you are experiencing and what is "really, really real" need not be the same. There is nothing intrsinsic to the senses and to the flow of ideas which show whether I'm in the Matrix, the mind of God, a BIJ or an actual physical space.
