Yeah, I got what you said, but I think the special effects were still rubbish by the end of the series, and so they didn't change the way I viewed the show. Of course the effects got slightly better, but they were still in a rubbish ship cockpit made of cardboard surrounded by flashing buttons
 which of course made the whole thing a lot more homely and funny!
