The problem you will find with M:TG after playing hearthstone is the "mana" issue. Although magic is much more in depth (not to mention way, way more complex at a fundamental level) it does have an inherent problem which games since have totally sorted out.
In HS, you generally just get 1 more maximum mana each turn. In Magic, instead you have "land" cards as well as creatures and spells (and some other stuff). You lay down the land cards, and use them to generate the mana. The problem here is that you can draw too few or too many land cards, leading to not being able to play your cards at all before losing, or having so much land you don't have enough other cards to win. Most of the time games work Ok, but it's really frustrating (especially in a fucking tournament!) when you draw just one or two land and then just sit there being able to do very little while you get clobbered.
However, it is an amazing game and it's well worth a try
It kept me enthralled for many many years. Another big difference, which newer games generally avoid also, is you can interact on your opponent's turn a lot. This makes the rules much more complex which is why I think it's been avoided mainly now.
You may want to check out a Duels of the Planeswalkers, it's a sort of beginners version of M:TG at a reasonable price. M:TG online is pretty intimidating, but has the full rules in place. It also requires much more investment. And of course you can buy physical cards which is all I actually did when I used to play!
