When my husband was deployed I made the mistake of telling my mother that I was praying for strength, patience and wisdom. She immediately told me not to pray for those things because god would do horrible things in my life to teach me those values. Strangely enough, she wasn't the only person who expressed terror at asking for things like strength or patience. Apparently, some of these people believe if you ask for patience, for example, then god would create events in your life that would frustrate or even harm you so that you will learn patience.
