This is a good question, and this is what I think a lot of people here don't understand. Yes, a person's religious beliefs, if they are devout, is a HUGE part of who they are.

It's basically like saying, "I'm not making fun of you, just making fun of your most core values and principles, what you stand for, and the things you hold most dear in your heart."
The thing is that if such a person has such core values and beliefs it simply wouldn't matter if someone makes fun of them.  Do KKK members change their views when people make fun of them?  Did Nazis change their views when we made fun of them in our WWII propaganda?  Did the early Christians usually change their views when they were being laughed at while dying in the Roman arenas? Do the Westboro Baptist Church nuts change their views when people make fun of them?  Did people respect the views of the flat earthers?  Embrace your insanity and delusions.  They are yours.  Take pride in them.  Love them.  Cherish them.  They are what make you, you.
