Did Bethlehem in Judea exist at the time of Jesus and also at the time of David?
Today I got this e-mail:
Paula Fredriksen (sp?, a New Testament scholar featured in one of our Living the Questions segments, informed us this month that Bethlehem in Judea, 150 miles from Nazareth, was non-existent in the first century. There was, however, a Bethlehem in Galilee only four miles from Nazareth, reasonable distance for a very pregnant woman to ride.
Of course, Matthew's and Luke's birth stories are different enough to contradict the veracity of either.
The emphasis on poverty is obvious.

I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
