I think the internet is probably the best tool in places like this. Young gay and lesbians don't have to feel isolated with a vast and vibrant community a click away. But that's only a balm for the daily tortures they have to endure in their schools and neighborhoods if they are "out".
I think it's kind of like race in america. While the court cases have come down on the side of equality and culturally the majority has claimed it's acceptance there is still a vast and pervasive web of intolerance that exists below the surface.
Rural areas in America are like the middle east except they are green and safe. (I got this from a place that never saw light)
