I would hesitate to call cars a necessary evil. They don't even seem to be a thoroughly considered evil. The notion that our society would crumble without cars ignores that in many of the densest parts of "our society" people -do- live without cars - and a world without cars would solve a hell of alot of related problems. Meh, why not go with both? Ban cars and guns - for the same reason (I could think of more reason to ban cars, personally). The we'd have ourselves a -much- safer and cleaner country. Plenty of other benefits from increased foot travel and more consolidated transportation - and you'd barely have to worry about getting shot on the bus or walking down the street at all. Anybody else got something they want to remove from their neighbors hands?
