Aside from everything else that's been said, there's also this element of not wanting to add leeway for misinterpretation, willful or otherwise, I'd imagine. The more exceptions a rule has, the more loopholes there are to be exploited; just off the top of my head, we're all people in different time zones with lives to lead anyway, and if we find ourselves in a position where, for whatever reason, all the mods are on ignore but one or two, only it's the dead of night where they are... well, how do we get into contact with this particular user? It creates a sort of witching hour for misbehavior, in a way.
