Not disagreeing with the bulk of what has been said here, I just want to add a comment about Tibbs' original reply. The ignore function is a convenience. Different people may have different opinions about the character or person of people who use the function, some sneering down their nose at users for being weak, others grateful the option exists, others not caring. I've never put anyone on ignore, but I recognize it is a valuable convenience to many, and I personally would not judge anyone's use of the function. In my other moderator role, we have mods who wouldn't be able to coexist peacefully if not for the ignore function. I don't think we should fault people for availing themselves of a convenience which we have provided. It's a valuable convenience and is provided because people find it legitimately useful. Imho, there is no shame in using the ignore function (within the rules, of course).
