While mass shootings like this are still statistically rare, I can't remember a time when they happened so frequently (45 of them just this year). And, of course, inner city shootings still happen with abandon, as well as accidents, suicides, etc.
While I believe that gun control needs to happen (even if it may be impossible to put the genie back in the bottle), that can't be all we focus on. Drug treatment, treatment and diagnosis of mental issues, higher educational standards, efforts to close the wage gap... basically, we need to make a real effort to address the myriad of issues that make people feel like gun violence is the answer to their desperation and anger.
Fuck the NRA, fuck only paying lip service to all of the interconnected problems that lead to people executing deadly attacks on others, fuck false bravado and Red Dawn fantasies. We need to actually work on this shit. Because it's not getting better.
