It may emulate perfectly up to the N64... but if you already have a desktop or laptop, you already have a machine that's powerful enough to emulate perfectly up to the playstation and gamecube... or even beyond those.
If it's to be a learning tool, you may already have it. Why waste mooneys on an extra device? one that will then call for a bluetooth keyboard and mouse... because you know you'll want those... more moolah!

But yeah, go ahead. The Raspberry Pi is a great little device that can run a full linux distro. I have one running right now, just so I can do ssh tunneling to my home and serve a few media files that I have on a usb stick.
I've tried the XBMC ROM on it and it played 1080p movie files flawlessly. Never did get to try emulators, because... no extra keyboard and mouse... I just used the ones connected to my main desktop computer to set up the Pi and now I only access it via SSH. It has X, so I can even run a web browser on that... but that's slow.

I'm a PC tech.  I know what you're saying.  But you can't easily lug a computer to a friend's house and it's just not as "cool".  You can use just a USB keyboard and mouse, which I usually have lying around in abundance.  That's if you even need them, which you don't after the setup for it to be an emulator.

And there's another reason to go with the Pi.  I've always wanted one, but I'm more of a "giver" than a "getter".  I don't spend money on myself, like, ever.  I'll get to play with it too.  If I'm lucky I can get him interested in projects we can work on together.  When I was his age there was nothing I loved more than BASIC programming on my Timex/Sinclair 1500 and Tandy Color Computer 3.  The best thing in the world for me was creating a program to make the computer do exactly what I wanted it to, no matter how stupid that thing was.  Whether it be a basketball scoreboard or a needle injecting a circle or consecutively larger circles creating a pattern, it was my greatest joy.  The Timex/Sinclair took something like 20 or 30 seconds just to clear the text off the screen, if I recall.

So, yeah, I know the emulators have been around for years.  I've used a few of them over the years.  Right now on my work computer I have an Adam computer emulator through which I put on Zaxxon just to pause it for the pause music, which I have always loved.  It's not the same, though.  PCs have never, ever brought me the joy the weird shit did.
Have you ever noticed all the drug commercials on TV lately?  Why is it the side effects never include penile enlargement or super powers?
Side effects may include super powers or enlarged penis which may become permanent with continued use.  Stop taking Killatol immediately and consult your doctor if you experience penis enlargement of more than 3 inches, laser vision, superhuman strength, invulnerability, the ability to explode heads with your mind or time travel.  Killatoll is not for everyone, especially those who already have convertibles or vehicles of ridiculous size to supplement penis size.
