Actually, the plan is for a pair of full-length movies. And given that movies have been getting longer in recent years, it seems it may actually give the story more room to breathe than the 1991 series did. Seriously, the 1991 miniseries was three hours long, just 90 minutes per part, and, of course, the content restrictions for today's theatre screens are a lot more lenient than those for network television decades ago. As long as they don't bollocks the whole thing up somehow (especially if Part 2 never gets made), there is no reason it doesn't have the potential to be a great adaptation that could potentially better the miniseries in some categories.
And while it's unfortunate that Tim Curry didn't reprise his role as Pennywise, well, given that he's been wheelchair bound for the past few years, it's not like he's in any condition to step back into the old clown suit. It would be like Frank Sinatra being offered the role of John McClane.
That said, Tim Curry did sometimes get a bit too campy for his own good in character:
