The entire scene leading up to it, they did a lot of shots that had tons of sky in them. Something about that, and the fact that we know Dany isn't at Dragon's Reach anymore, told me exactly what was about to happen.

You could think of it as he saved Jaime because without him, he can't get more gold.
I could... And I guess maybe I'm nitpicking here. But I don't. If he got killed, which he won't have gotten but which he should have gotten with 99% certainty in any real situation, he wouldn't be able to get more gold neither. It's why he refused to fight the mountain for Tyrion... But ah, I'm not bringing forth new points. I've been repeating myself , I guess I don't have any more to say on the matter.
The episode was still amazing though.
