The theory is based on the evidence that the whole universe was once in a hot, dense state. It works backwards, it would be silly to come up with an idea of how the universe started and then look around for evidence to confirm it.
What's funny is that there isn't a shortage of apologists who claim the Big Bang is evidence of the Bible story of Genesis (the Big Bang is when God said 'let there be light').
Just like it's funny that no one makes the connection that God raising man from the dust is an excellent metaphor for evolving from microorganisms.
Christians can have their scientific cake and eat it too, and millions do.

It might have contradictory attributes, or be said to have had an effect on the universe that there is evidence against having happened. That takes care of the God of Theodicy and the God of Abraham.
