Why are the Abraham religions so interested in controlling people sexually

I read somewhere (not sure where) that the big reason the Israelites latched onto sexual sin was because it was a convenient way of universalising sin, since the vast majority of us have sexual thoughts, and the Egyptians (whom they had apparently just escaped from, if you believe the Exodus account) had sex as such a big part of their culture that Ancient Egyptian didn't even have a word for "virgin." And, of course, since Christianity and Islam were offshoots of Judaism, it only makes sense that they would inherit that cultural baggage.
