The president has, apparently, rejected the very smart idea of using GOP dominance of the senate to dismiss any potential impeachment proceedings, in favor of a full trial.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have the authority to dismiss the impeachment proceedings. Once the House passes articles of impeachment, the Senate is required to hold a trial.
I suspect (but cannot prove) that if the Senate could hold a secret ballot at the trial, Trump would be convicted so fast the air would crackle.
