I would agree about the buses being a disaster. Here one company drove all other competitors out, then cut routes and hiked the prices.
Ironically it was the same company as the rail franchisee so the train in the same livery, was cheaper, faster, more punctual and more comfortable than the bus running the same route. It wasn't uncommon to pass the bus on the train and see it empty whilst the train was full. The only real complaint was the fact that the franchisee had a fetish for pacer trains which could get overcrowded at peak times.
