Those idiots were willing to freeze their asses off and risk contracting COVID. I have run out of sympathy.
I guess I take a *M*A*S*H* Hawkeye BJ approach to stupid people. I don't have to like them. But if the roles were reversed, I think about what I would want others to do for me. Just like EMTs police and doctors. If you get into a car accident and are injured, and only civilians were around to help a, but someone noticed an atheist bumper sticker on your car I would bet you would not want them to leave you. If I saw a car crash with a Jesus bumper sticker and a Trump sticker, I would still help them. Not because I like them, but because at that point they are helpless. I can yell at them when they are healthy.
And even enemies have helped each other after things like airplane crash investigations or natural disasters. It isn't that the governments like each other, or should like each other's governments. But there are things in life where it is simply a matter of humanity.

And the truth is like it or not, families are not static, co workers are not static, and even friends are not static. We all live together in politically mixed families, even if not immediate . My best friend John from Oklahoma is an atheist and a liberal, his dad is a Trump supporter. I doubt he'd want anything to happen to his dad if he went to a rally. I hate Trump with a passion. But I wouldn't claim all Trump supporters are raging fascist lovers. His dad did a good job with him. And his dad hasn't disowned him for being a liberal atheist.
Trump is like any suicide cult story you hear about from family members. They love the person and want them out and are horrified that they got sucked into it.
There are surely truly beyond saving Trump supporters, the far right fundies, and neo Nazis and KKK members. But you will never get me or John to say, "Roy" that is his dad's name, "I have no sympathy for Roy for freezing his ass off and risking covid."
But I do hope for those who do get sick and survive they learn their lesson.
What were civilians going to do? Fire up their helicopters? A lot of two lane highways in that part of the Midwest have deep ditches on both sides and shoulders that may or may not be wide enough for a standard sedan. If something happens on one of those roads there can be no movement for a long damn time.
Give my regards to John and Roy.
