Our cold war inheritance. I don't know that the UK can really be pointed at as an exemplar of assistance or even if it's in a position to lend assistance to anyone, especially now.
US states single-handedly crush national economies, and we have the largest effective military and foreign aid apparatus in the world...possibly the largest the world has ever seen. That does amplify the effect of our mistakes (as well as our intentional fuckery), ofc. I don't personally take the tack that other countries shouldn't complain..they're going to complain, someone would complain even if we were saints with pure motives. That's just something we have to accept if we want to attempt to be the good guys in any conflict or disagreement, that to someone we will always be the bad guy, no matter what.
Even when it comes to iraq and afghanistan, it's not really that we didn't provide assistance. We did. More that the ratio of assistance to "other than" was far too high. We need to work on that ratio, still...for all of our flaws and mistakes, and there will always be flaws and mistakes..it's hard to argue that the united states hasn't been a net good. Thusfar, at least, lol, there's always tomorrow.
