I guess since my kids are grown I hadn't paid attention to some of the details regarding school attendance here in TX.
Mask mandates have been outlawed by Gov. Abbott, I knew that. Kids are attending school in person without an option to study remote. I found out today that there is really NO option to study remote. So if a kid is quarantined for 10-14 days due to COVID exposure, they have to make up the work after they return to school, at the discretion of the teacher(s). In a very short time the first nine weeks will be done and grades will come out. Anyone failing or in danger of failing will be dropped from things like sports and band.
Here's what's happening - teachers have a set amount of time to enter daily grades and if a kid is out due to COVID they get a 0. For the marching band and flagline (that my granddaughter is part of) about a third of the kids are in danger of being thrown out of band/flagline due to grades and it's largely due to being forced to quarantine.
The flag the governor and other politicians have been flying is how important it is to have the kids learn in person but they have made no concession to those same kids being subject to quarantine and possibly screwing up their academics...who wants to take a guess at how many exposed or sick kids are going to school because of this BS?
