I can come up with two reasons:
1) Odds are, only a minority of the customers in those restaurants need to be carded, and not every one. Not much of a burden, I admit, just an extra hassle.
2) Dealing with anti-vaxx jackasses who flip the fuck out at anyone who dares to enforce COVID-related restrictions like they're actively trying to get on r/publicfreakout.
Okay, I think I came up with a reason why #1 might be a somewhat bigger burden than i originally thought: having to turn away honest people who neglected to bring proof of their vaccination, which can be a problem since the official vaccine cards are of a size inconvenient for wallets and having to pull it out and repeatedly unfold it can increase wear and tear, and while you could just take a picture of it and keep it on your phone, that photo can easily get lost in the shuffle, especially if you’ve taken a lot of photos in the meantime. I don’t even know if There’s a way around that, but if there is, the fact that I don’t know what it is tells me that there’s probably millions of others who also don’t. Hence how I came up with the lanyard solution. For anyone curious, Here’s the passport sleeve I use and if you don’t have a lanyard lying around the house, here’s a cheap one on Etsy with free shipping.
