Does that seem to be the basis? I think you've been hearing arguments from the avoidance of harm. Here's how this goes, if you use the developed human concept of morality and try to apply it to things like aardvarks and zebra, it doesn't work very well. Now why would that be? Likely has to do with the notion that morality is not some intrinsic foundation of the universe as seen in theology, but a very small product of a very small subset of creatures that has a wide range of subjectivity across those boundaries. If you shitcan the moral authority garbage you'll be able to better "explore" these sorts of observations.
Here's a simple "naturalistic" observation. Nature is not some absolute moral authority. It, like the badger below, don't give a shit. Are you built as a vehicle to protect and perpetuate life? Sure. Is that somehow morally right or wrong? No, not even close.
