Then Darwin was a little late. By the time of the publication of Origin of Species, the slave trade was winding down, and slavery was illegal in most European nations.

If he's talking about how the population is so low, then the fact is that Earth has a sort of "carrying capacity" for the number of people that Earth can comfortably support. If it reaches that level, the population just levels off. That said, technology is capable of replacing this "carrying capacity."
