Fear of death
#21
RE: Fear of death
I do believe in an after life and do not fear for my own death. I do have fears of death like most do if, they are honest about living. My fear of death is losing those I love and seeing the sorrow of the ones they leave behind. I hated losing my father even though I knew I'd see him again, even for christians who lose loved ones death takes on a perception of permanency because we are still here, in this life, and can not have that relationship of love we so desire. I personally do not look forward to the dying process, it could be a messy affair, I hope not but we are not guaranteed anything. I do look forward to what comes next and wish I had a better idea of what it's going to be like. It's good to see so many here that have good family relationships, that is one thing that makes the journey worthwhile.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Do you fear our take on death then?

I love my family, happily give up my one-and-only existence for them. But I have no desire to live again. I've put up with enough bullshit as it is and still there's more to come before I finally kick the bucket. The tranquillity of the void of nothingness, absolute zero, endless darkness is beyond compare to this mad world. Words fail to describe how peaceful this abyss of non-existence is considering all the chaos, insanity, wars, conflicts, horrors, terrors and anguish that has occurred in this one finite life alone. They say that life is short and yet ironically its the longest thing you'll ever do... but your concept of an afterlife, yet another burden, another prison within a prison sounds completely abhorrent to me. For sake of argument we say there is an afterlife, then it is that which I truly fear, much more than the extinction of my conscious.

I can endure one lifetime, but not another one, unless my memories are purged. Even then the thought of reincarnation horrifies me somewhat, because we'd still have to live through the same inevitable trials, stress and suffering that was in the last. Given the choice, I don't want to come back, ever. Its just too much of a hassle. Indeed the only legitimate question left is why were the damned forces of nature such that my life came into existence in the first place, which is also the pursuit of scientific investigation.

To quote Futurama -
Bender: "Afterlife? Pfft. If I'd thought I had to go through a whole 'nother life, I'd kill myself right now."
Leela: "Well rot in peace."

IF there is a God who dragged us crying into this pitiable state of mortal existence I'd gladly tell that fucker off for creating such a loathsome design and refuse to partake his in sick game any further:

The journey to hell?

If it's a journey to hell, can it ever be worthwhile?

Of course, it's made up, so I won't worry. I must admit I'd be more worried if I was a christian? Have I done enough to please the insane, egotistical shy daddy? Will it be like I expected or hoped for? Etc etc.

I am convinced that the main reason that christians cling on to faith and convince themselves it is true, is fear of death. Religions all seem to be about dying and after death, as if they were desgned to allay fears of death. If anything, they create more fears.

Hey, chin up man, surely things can't be that bad? Have you talked to a professional about your feelings, because you seem depressed to me and I'm getting slightly concerned.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

They have been, and they will be again. Misery is a fact of life I'm afraid.

Yes, its faulty genetics. I inherited Asperger's syndrome, autism and personality disorders from both my mother and father that often lead me on downward spirals to self-hatred. Its a vicious cycle that repeats.

So what? Naturally, we've evolved, so you're "programming" to feel that way and be pro-life.

Why can't I cherish life only because its finite and eagerly anticipate my death whenever and wherever it comes? Because it scares you?

Never gave that a thought when I replied, all I intended was to show how much I value family and how important family is in our journey through life. What your journey results in is your choice, as for me I chose to continue with God.

You should read and study the NT, life is precious and meant to be enjoyed, many times we are told in the NT that we can have great joy in our lives as chritians and we should live that way even when times seem to be quite rough. We as christians understand that life's ways are not guaranteed to go smoothly, we are told if we will trust God he will walk through the bad times with us and bring us through our troubles. Yes, I do mean christians can find comfort and joy while going through hardships as long as we allow God to have control over our situation. Life itself is about dying so why would christianity ignore what is going to come eventually, christianity gives believers hope and that hope leads to eternal life. Let me make a suggestion, if you will carefully study scripture and I do mean carefully you will find that scriptures teach that sin is what brings the fear of death. Christ was sent to defeat death (and he did) and in that we have forgiveness of sin and in forgiveness we have eternal life. So you see christians need not fear death, most of us do have a fear of how we'll die. [/quote]

In total agreeance with Welsh Cake. Glad to die...at least one escapes the childish BS.

Yes I have a fear of the way you look at death, but I do not have a fear of the death you see, that death will never be a part of my life and death.

The next life I will have is one of no pain, trouble, fear, sickness or anything bad. It's promised to be full and wonderful, one of eternal wonders and a place of no worries, full of adventure and joy, worship and thanksgiving for the One who will give me that life. I surely see no way to fear that life and actually can see something to look forward to and excited about.

Before I responded to this post I read all the post, I'm sorry that you suffer the way you do, it must be difficult, since you do not want to hear me preach all I know to say is try and look at the best things in your life (family and ect.) and focus on them and the great wonders and joy in them, if you find happiness difficult to come by try enjoying the happiness of the ones you love, I guess you probably do that now and if so that's good. I would also have a fear of reincarnation if it were true, I sure would not want to return as a dung beetle, that would be hell rolling poop around all day. As I said above my life after death of this mortal body will be wonderful and so for all believers in Christ.
