Hi, I am currently completing a degree program in the field of astrophysics.
I too am a space geek, I have loved the cosmos since I was old enough to star gaze. I have a B.S in Astronomy/Astrophysics with a minor in Psychology. I am currently going for my master's. I hope to be a theoretical astrophysicists. I want to work in the research aspect of astronomy and possibly write for some scientific journals.
The only down side of science degrees is that you usually need an advanced degree such as Ph.D in order to really get anywhere. This is something I was not clearly aware of when I was an undergrad. I was hoping to find employment that would help with furthering my education.
As a career I have mainly been using my Minor in Psychology and worked as a probation officer. I have just recently decided to go back to school and make my dreams come true. It is a few classes at a time, and will most likely take quite a few years to achieve what I really desire amongst the demands of a family.
My dream is to work as a researcher or write for scientific journals. I will even consider teaching Astronomy at the college level should I find openings.
The bottom line is, I love astronomy and the physical and mathematical properties of the universe. It is something that I cannot escape and desire to understand fully. I am in my mid-thirties so I still have plenty of time given the normal life expectancy to obtain my degree and work in my field for many years. If not, I will die trying.
So, it this is what you want to do, go for it. I would just suggest minoring in something different that does interest you. So if you have to get a job outside of your science preference you can while you work and continue your pursuit in Astronomy/Astrophysics.

Whatever unseen, no matter how improbable, must be the cause.
