I've seen abandoned churches before, but I find abandoned buildings of any kind depressing, so I don't really see that as a victory.
My town is not shrinking, though. There seems to be constant development of houses and plazas cutting into more and more of the green space (it is actually one of the major problems here). So this could mean there are less religious people now.

Here too. My favourite is 'St Pauls' a nice old former Anglican pile which is now a night club. It is now called 'Heaven' and is perhaps the most notorious nightspot in the city
It's common in Australia to turn little old country churches into quite nice homes. Have never heard of one becoming a brothel. I guess even in Oz that might be pushing the envelope.

One of my favorite bookstores is in an old church building. I bought one of Victor Stengers' books there.
