Another PC question
May 7, 2009 at 8:02 am
What do you think would happen if I simply took the C drive out of my AMD Dual Core PC and put it into my new Intel Core 2 Duo PC? (Thanks Kyu)
It would save an awful lot of hassle as I wouldn't have to re-install everything.
Is this possible and what kind of problems might I encounter?

Out of personal experience: It tries to load all the device drivers of the old machine, with a very likely chance of it crashing. Virtually none of the system devices of the old machine match those of the new machine, so unless the device discovery can load the drivers for the new hardware before it boots trough it will try to access the new hardware with the old drivers and crash.

You could try booting from an XP CD and running a repair to install the new drivers, when you first swap the drive over. Depends what apps you have installed though as it could mess with them.
I've also seen this described recently using sysprep: adding drivers then resealing.
Take an image first then you can always go back if it doesn't work.

I should add that some versions of windows requires you to re-register after a significant amount of hardware has been changed. Do not attempt this if you do not know what your key is.
