If they do indeed find the elusive Higgs-Boson particle associated with the equally elusive Higgs field how much further will this take us to forming a theory of everything?

Not very close at all!

At the moment we a succesful theory of electromagnetism and the weak interaction, the imaginitively named electroweak therory.

To get to a theory of everything, the strong interaction (responsible for holding nuclei together) and gravity must be incorporated.

Supersymmetry is a nice theory that incorporates the strong interaction into the electroweak theory, unfortunately there's no experimental evidence that it's true yet.


The biggest hurdle to overcome in building a ToE is putting quantum mechanics and general relativity together in the same theoretical framework. Despite our best efforts they seem to be totally incompatible.

A way around would be to formulate a theory of quantum gravity that predicts the same as general relativity in the classical (large-scale) limit.
This takes us into the realm of quantum foam, which at the moment, is poorly understood...

At least it will be a painless death. Current black hole theory states that your body gets pulled into atoms faster than your nerves can send pain message up to your brain. Pretty awesome

Woah this is going to be freaky. It would be really weird if non of the above happened but actually something more weird than all of them happened. Something TOTALLY unexpected.
What could happen? It's not been turned on yet - we don't actually KNOW.

Maybe it will manifest the FSM? You never know. Or maybe everyone's imaginations will run wild like on South Park Imaginationland and all the imaginary things will become REAL!
I bet all the theists would be like "See - I told you God was real! I told ya! But you just didn't listen did you?".

The FSM will overpower all other imaginary things of course. But actually - the FSM is real anyway! (I didn't mean to blaspheme the FSM with my accidental doubt ). So perhaps we'll actually have the FSM + some kind of imaginary variation(s) of the FSM??

Anyway - anything could happen. Very weird - I can't wait!
Possible doom of the universe can be very exciting! Can't it?

Actually I do happen to be listening to the Original Doom game midi soundtrack right now - I'm a total gaming retro Geek.

Perhaps it's an Omen of our doom lol. Or our Ultimate Doom - perhaps I'll play that today lol.

On the comment about there being no world for Jesus to return to. If the christians are right and Jesus can ressurect then we have absolutely nothing to fear, theres no way we can frack up bad enough to destroy the world. Theres some place in the bible that says god will not let harm come to the earth.

We know it's a load, we can blow up the world 20 times over without using HALF our nukes.
