There's some nice stuff in this thread. I forgot it existed! Here's two renders of a character I modelled for a game I'm going to develop:

Kin is a 3D side-scroller using the UDK. The player, an Australian Aborigine in pre-colonial Australia, treks with two others from his tribe* across the country to rescue his kinsmen from the Rainbow Serpent who tricked and devoured them. There is no spoken or textual dialogue in the game, instead the ideas, interaction, dreams and memories are conveyed visually in the sky.
- *Apparently "tribe" is a "'colonial concept' and gives rise to misconceptions of a society 'territorially defined...and controlled by the authority...of a chief or council.'" (Sandra Bloodworth) That author used "language group" instead.

The art will lean toward being stylised, rather than hyper realistic. Throughout the game things will be perpetually silhouetted, as illustrated by some photos I took some time ago:
