RS - oftentimes people have much more in common than they realize.

Sure, but that doesn't make the fundamental differences go away.

No, but it sure helps when trying to some sort of common ground to stop the pissing matches.

One big problem though

Most of us consider religious people to be delusional

Not all people who class themselves as religious are completely delusional

RE: Understanding/Sympathizing/forbearing people
Sigh...

I cannot think of a single reason why I should respect someone's religious beliefs. If one joins a forum that revolves around discussing worldviews and beliefs they cannot expect to be viewed as anything other than their beliefs. To discuss thought and viewpoints is the entire purpose of being here. A Christian who begins posting here might be the nicest, sweetest, and most genuine person I will ever meet. But so fucking what? We are here to discuss ideas and concepts, at least in the sub-forums designated for such. I will not feign respect for something I despise or tiptoe around someone's contemptuous bile that is their belief system. If I were to discuss sports or television shows with them, fine. I would respect their opinions and have a lovely, innocuous discussion with them about it. But on forums like this, you are what you believe because that is the purpose of these discussions.

I will show contempt where contempt is due.

Then those people are selectively delusional, which makes them even more hypocritical and slithery than unswerving 'straight arrow' believers.

Not necessarily. Cognitive dissonance is a funny thing.
